Blackboard to Moodle, The Conversion Manual.

Blackboard course archives look intimidating and convert better than most people expect — if you handle gradebook mapping and question pools deliberately instead of hoping the importer does. This is the process, step by step, including the parts that do not convert and what to do about them.

The short answer: Export each Blackboard course as a full archive package (including grade history), convert it to a Moodle backup, then rebuild deliberately: map Grade Center columns to Moodle gradebook categories and scales, convert question pools to the Moodle question bank, and replace Building Block tools with plugins or LTI 1.3 equivalents. Verify restored courses with instructors before the Blackboard contract ends.

Step 1: Export archives the right way

Use Export/Archive Course and select the full archive, not the content-only export. Include Grade Center history if your institution's retention policy requires grade records to survive the move — this decision is much harder to revisit after the contract lapses.

  • Export per course, not in bulk — per-course archives restore and verify independently
  • Include: content areas, assessments, question pools, grade schema, user data where policy allows
  • Keep a manifest: course code, archive size, export date, instructor of record

Expect archive sizes to be large for media-heavy courses. That is normal; conversion time tracks archive size more than course count.

Step 2: Convert archives to Moodle backups

Blackboard archives restore into Moodle through the course restore flow with content mapping. Learning modules become Moodle sections; documents, files and media carry across; discussion boards become forums with their structure intact.

What converts cleanly: pages, files, folders, assignments (as submission points), tests whose question types have Moodle equivalents, and rubrics in most cases. What needs manual work: anything built on a Building Block, publisher cartridge content tied to Blackboard integration, and SafeAssign-specific settings (replaced by your Turnitin or Ouriginal plugin configuration).

Step 3: Map the Grade Center deliberately

This is where migrations quietly succeed or rot. Blackboard Grade Center columns, weighted totals and grading schemas must land as Moodle gradebook categories, aggregation rules and letter scales with the same maths — not approximately the same.

Mapping worksheet (per course):
Blackboard column -> Moodle grade item
Weighted total column -> Category aggregation (weighted mean)
Grading schema (A-F) -> Letter scale (site-level, verified)
Extra credit column -> Grade item with aggregation handling noted

Verify with a known student record: pick three completed students per pilot course and compare their totals on both systems to the decimal.

Step 4: Move question pools into the question bank

Question pools export with the archive and convert into Moodle question bank categories. Multiple choice, true/false, matching, calculated and essay types map well. After import, run a sample quiz from every pool and check feedback, randomisation and scoring — question conversion errors are silent until a student hits them.

Step 5: The verification gate

No course is 'migrated' until its instructor has clicked through it on Moodle: opened the files, previewed a quiz, checked the gradebook totals. Run a pilot faculty first, fix the pattern issues once, then convert the rest in waves by department.

  • Pilot 3-5 courses with engaged instructors
  • Fix conversion patterns at the template level, not per course
  • Convert in waves, verify each wave before the next
  • Keep Blackboard read-only access until the final wave verifies

Frequently asked questions

Do Blackboard rubrics survive conversion?

Usually, yes — rubrics attached to assignments convert in most cases. We verify rubric attachment per pilot course, because a rubric that detaches silently is worse than one that obviously fails.

What happens to SafeAssign submissions?

Historical submissions stay in your Blackboard archive exports for record-keeping. New submissions on Moodle use your Turnitin or Ouriginal plugin. The archive itself should be retained per your institution's policy regardless of platform.

Can student grade history move to Moodle?

Grade Center history can be exported and preserved; whether it should be re-imported as live Moodle grade data or archived as records is a policy decision we walk through with you. Most institutions archive history and start the gradebook fresh per term.

How long does an institution-wide conversion take?

A pilot wave takes days. Full institutions phase across a term — departments convert and verify in waves so teaching never stops. The critical date is your Blackboard contract end; planning starts at least one term before it.

What does LMSOps charge for a Blackboard migration?

A fixed $300 for a standard migration after a free audit of course count and archive sizes. Multi-faculty institutional moves are quoted in writing after the audit — the price is fixed before work starts, never after.
